OGame Lifeform Food & Population Planner

Lifeforms added two extra resources on top of the usual three: Population and Food. Every hour your population eats through your food stockpile — run a deficit for too long and population starts shrinking, which switches off every Lifeform technology bonus you've unlocked until it recovers. Gameforge has never published the exact formulas behind population growth curves or per-building bonus scaling (and every third-party source that claims to have them disagrees with the others), so rather than guess, this tool does the one thing that's fully knowable: takes the production and consumption numbers already shown on your own Lifeform overview screen and projects exactly when you'll run dry, or how full your storage gets.

How to read your food balance

Where to find your real numbers in-game

Open your planet's Lifeform overview screen — it shows current population, food production per hour, food consumption per hour, and your current food storage against its capacity. Those are the exact numbers this planner needs; nothing here is estimated or guessed, it's simple arithmetic run forward on data you already have in front of you.

Why "net balance" matters more than either number alone

Production and consumption both matter only in relation to each other. A planet producing 80,000 food an hour sounds healthy until you see it's also consuming 95,000 — that's a 15,000/hour deficit that will eventually drain even a large stockpile. Watching the net number (and how fast your storage bar is moving) is more useful day to day than either raw figure.

What happens when food actually runs out

When storage hits zero and production still can't cover consumption, population starts shrinking to bring consumption back in line with what you can actually produce. Since population size gates your Lifeform technology bonuses, a shrinking population means those bonuses scale down or switch off until you rebuild — which is why catching a deficit early, while there's still runway in storage, is worth doing regularly rather than only when you notice bonuses have already dropped.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my OGame Lifeform food balance?

Subtract your food consumption per hour from your food production per hour — that's your net balance. If it's negative, divide your current food storage by the deficit to get hours until you run out. This planner does that math automatically from the numbers already shown on your in-game Lifeform screen.

Why doesn't this tool calculate my exact population growth or Lifeform tech bonuses?

Gameforge has never published the exact formulas for population growth curves or per-level Lifeform bonus scaling, and third-party sources that claim to have reverse-engineered them don't agree with each other. Rather than present a guess as fact, this tool sticks to what's fully verifiable: projecting your own real production and consumption numbers forward in time.

What happens if my population starts shrinking?

Your Lifeform technology bonuses are gated by population size — as population drops, those bonuses scale down and can switch off entirely until population recovers. This is the main reason to catch a food deficit early rather than after it's already visibly hurting your economy.

Does switching Lifeform species reset my population?

Yes — population is tied to whichever species is currently active on a planet, so switching species drops population on that planet back down and it has to rebuild from scratch. How fast it rebuilds varies by species and is affected by your economy speed settings and population-boosting buildings.

Which Lifeform species should I pick?

It depends on your playstyle more than any single "best" answer: Humans are the balanced generalist pick, Rock'tal leans into economy and defense, Mechas favor fast production and aggressive expansion, and Kaelesh leans toward research and expedition-heavy play. See the comparison cards above for a quick overview.

Why do my in-game numbers not match a formula I found online?

Because no single public formula for Lifeform population or bonus scaling has actually been confirmed accurate — different community sources disagree, and Gameforge hasn't published official constants. Your own in-game screens are always the authoritative source for your current numbers; this planner just projects those forward rather than trying to recompute them from scratch.
