Every fleet order in OGame lives or dies by one question: how long will it actually take to get there, and how much deuterium will it burn doing it? The in-game fleet screen only shows you that answer after you've already picked a destination and speed — this calculator flips that around. Enter any two coordinates, pick your ship and research levels, and get exact flight time and fuel cost before you commit a single ship.
Distance and flight-time formulas are the same ones the live game uses (verified against the OGame Wiki and cross-checked against our own Expedition Calculator, which uses the identical duration formula) — not official Gameforge source code, so treat results as a strong estimate, especially on private servers with non-standard speed or fuel settings.
How OGame flight time and fuel are calculated
Distance
OGame uses three different distance formulas depending on how far apart the two coordinates are. Same system, different planet: 1,000 + 5 × |position difference|. Same galaxy, different system: 2,700 + 95 × |system difference| — and system numbers wrap around at 499, so system 1 and system 499 are only 2 systems apart, not 498. Different galaxy: a flat 20,000 × |galaxy difference|, with no wraparound. A planet and its own moon or debris field are always exactly 5 units apart, regardless of position.
Flight time
Once distance is known, flight time depends on your slowest ship's effective speed (base speed plus its drive technology bonus — Combustion, Impulse or Hyperspace Drive, +10%/+20%/+30% per level respectively) and the speed percentage you choose on the fleet dispatch screen. Flying at 100% gets you there fastest; dropping to 50% roughly doubles flight time but cuts deuterium cost noticeably, which is the standard trade-off for long, resource-heavy trips like colonizing or recycling debris fields far from home.
Fuel cost
Deuterium cost scales with each ship's base fuel consumption, distance, and speed percentage — flying faster burns disproportionately more fuel per unit of time saved, since the formula squares the speed-percentage term. This is why most players cruise at 100% for short, urgent trips but drop to 80% or lower for routine cargo runs where deuterium efficiency matters more than shaving a few minutes off the clock.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate flight time in OGame without logging in?
You need the origin and destination coordinates, your ship's speed (base speed plus drive technology bonus), and your chosen speed percentage. Plug all of that into the calculator above and it applies the same formula the live fleet-dispatch screen uses.
Why is flight time to a nearby system sometimes longer than to a far one?
Distance jumps in large fixed steps between distance "tiers" — moving one system over costs a flat 2,700 base plus 95 per system, while moving one position within the same system only costs 1,000 plus 5 per position. A destination one system away can genuinely be farther than one many positions away in your own system.
Does speed percentage affect fuel cost a lot?
Yes — fuel cost scales with the square of (speed% + 100%), so going from 50% to 100% speed roughly doubles your fuel burn, not just increases it proportionally. For long, low-urgency trips, flying slower is usually the more deuterium-efficient choice.
What speed should I use for a fleetsave or long recycler run?
Most experienced players default to 100% for anything time-sensitive (fleetsaves, attacks that must land at a precise moment) and drop to 50-80% for routine, non-urgent cargo or recycler runs to conserve deuterium — use the calculator above to compare both against your own fleet's numbers before deciding.
Why don't system numbers just get farther apart in a straight line?
OGame systems wrap around at 499 — system 499 sits right next to system 1, the same way midnight sits next to 11:59pm on a clock. The calculator automatically takes the shorter direction around that wraparound when computing distance.
Why doesn't my in-game flight time match this calculator exactly?
This calculator uses the standard OGame ruleset formulas. If your server runs a custom fleet speed factor, deuterium consumption factor, or altered ship speeds, adjust the matching dropdowns above to your server's actual settings — the fleet dispatch screen in-game is always the final authority on exact numbers.
