OGameXL: The Classic OGame Experience Before Lifeforms, Now Faster
OGameXL is a free private OGame server built on the classic pre-Lifeforms ruleset, with a faster economy and construction speed, run by a team with 10+ years of hands-on OGame server experience.

If you learned to love OGame long before Lifeforms buildings, artifacts, and a second research tree ever existed, OGameXL was built for you. It is an independently developed browser game, not a modified copy of official OGame but its own build from the ground up, that deliberately keeps the classic pre-Lifeforms ruleset intact, the version most veteran players still consider the "real" OGame, and then adds a modern engineering layer on top, including a custom Rust-based battle engine.
What Is OGameXL?
OGameXL is a free-to-play, independently built game running on the classic OGame formula: build your economy, research your technologies, grow a fleet, and fight for territory in a shared galaxy with real players. There is no Lifeforms layer to learn, no second tech tree competing for your research queue, and no colony-specific bonuses to plan around, just the building, research, and combat system that defined OGame for over a decade before Lifeforms arrived.
Classic Foundation, Expanded Depth
The core will feel instantly familiar: 18 buildings (8 resource buildings, 10 facility/station buildings), 17 ship types (8 civilian, 9 military), 10 defense units, and 16 research fields. From the Metal Mine to the Death Star, from the Espionage Probe to the Pathfinder, the full classic roster is here, and the formulas stay true to the original (Metal Mine production, for example, is calculated as 30 × level × 1.1^level).
What sets OGameXL apart are three major additions built on top of that classic skeleton:
- 3 character classes (Collector, General, Discoverer) grant permanent bonuses based on your playstyle; switching classes costs 500,000 Dark Matter.
- 3 alliance classes (Warriors, Traders, Researchers) apply bonuses across the whole alliance. Warriors gain fleet speed and espionage-scan advantages, Traders excel at production and storage, and Researchers stand out in colony size and expedition speed.
- The Directives system, a massive progression tree with 10 chapters and 86 tasks, guiding players through every corner of the game, from buildings to research, fleet composition to alliance membership.
Classic OGame, the Way It Was Before Lifeforms
Lifeforms added a lot to official OGame, new buildings, a second tech tree, colony-specific racial bonuses, but it also added a lot of complexity and a much steeper learning curve for new players. OGameXL's mechanics deliberately mirror OGame's structure from before the 2022 Lifeform update: the same Metal, Crystal, and Deuterium economy, the same familiar research tree, and the same fleet and defense units players already know inside out. If you stopped playing when Lifeforms launched, or never wanted to learn it in the first place, this is the version of the game you remember, just running much faster.
A Faster Economy and Faster Construction
OGameXL does not run on official-server speeds. Server speeds stand out: 1000x economy speed and 500x research speed, so you are not waiting hours for a single mine upgrade or days to finish a research project. Empires grow noticeably faster here, you will see real progress in your first session, not just your first week.
The Battle Engine: Trillion-Strong Fleets, Powered by Rust
Perhaps OGameXL's most technical achievement is its Rust-based combat engine. It is up to 200x faster and uses up to 10x less memory than a PHP equivalent, meaning even fleets numbering in the millions, or trillions, resolve in seconds. Massive battles are queued and processed in the background without locking up the server. Players who want to test the engine directly can use the standalone Combat Simulator to model scenarios with real data before committing a fleet.
Fleet missions cover the full classic list: Attack, ACS (Alliance Combat System), Transport, Deployment, ACS Defend, Espionage, Colonization, Harvest, Moon Destruction, Missile Attack, and Expedition. The Expedition system is especially rich, with many possible outcomes, finding ships, discovering resources, Dark Matter rewards, merchant offers, item discoveries, even fleet losses, each independently weighted and balanced.
Earning Dark Matter
Building up Dark Matter in OGameXL is not hard. Every account automatically receives 150,000 Dark Matter each week. On top of that, daily online bonuses reward you with a solid chunk of Dark Matter whenever you happen to be online when they trigger. Expeditions also deliver steady, satisfying amounts of Dark Matter.
Quick-Start Universes
Not everyone wants to commit to a year-long universe. OGameXL regularly runs quick-start rounds designed to be played through to a real conclusion in a matter of weeks, not months, a full arc of building, alliances, and combat without the multi-year commitment a classic-speed OGame universe usually asks for.
Social and Community Layer
OGameXL is about more than building. It comes with an in-game forum, chat, a friends list (Buddies), player notes, universal search, and a public Battle Hall (an archive of battle reports players can comment on and react to). Leaderboards track seven separate categories: overall, economy, research, and military (built/lost/destroyed).
Regular campaigns keep things lively: production boosts ("Happy Hour"), construction time discounts, moon-chance increases, and special events that push the expedition Dark Matter multiplier up to 9x, all announced automatically to players.
Run by a Team With Over a Decade of OGame Experience
OGameXL is not a first attempt by a new admin team. It is built and run by people who have been building and maintaining OGame-style servers for more than ten years, which shows up in the parts players usually only notice when they are missing: stable uptime, fast support responses, and a ruleset that is actually balanced instead of guessed at. The economy and combat tuning here comes from a decade of watching what makes these servers fun, and what quietly kills them.
Accessibility: 12 Languages
OGameXL is currently fully localized in 12 languages: Turkish (primary), English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Czech, and Traditional Chinese, making it genuinely accessible to an international audience.
Under the Hood
Behind the scenes, OGameXL runs on Laravel 13, with a self-hosted WebSocket server (Reverb) for real-time notifications, on a Docker-based infrastructure. The interface is deliberately built with server-side rendered pages and jQuery to stay faithful to the classic experience, not a modern SPA, a choice that preserves the nostalgic feel.
OGameXL vs. a Standard OGame-Style Server
| Feature | OGameXL | Typical Standard-Speed Server |
|---|---|---|
| Ruleset | Classic, pre-Lifeforms | Often includes Lifeforms |
| Economy & research speed | 1000x / 500x | Slow to moderate |
| Battle engine | Custom Rust engine, trillion-scale fleets in seconds | Usually PHP, slower at scale |
| Learning curve | Familiar, classic system only | Steeper with Lifeforms added |
| Universe length | Classic + Quick-Start rounds available | Usually one long-running mode only |
| Team experience | 10+ years running OGame-style servers | Varies widely |
| Cost to play | Free | Varies |
How to Get Started
Getting into OGameXL takes less than a minute, registration is free, and you will be placed in the galaxy with your first planet right away. If you already know how buildings, research, and fleets work from playing OGame before, nothing here will feel unfamiliar; you are just playing it faster, and without Lifeforms in the way.
